Strength Training for Women Over 40 in St Ives & Huntingdon

Maybe you've been thinking about trying weights for a while.

You keep hearing that strength training is something women should be doing.

You'd like to feel stronger.

Maybe you'd like to change your body composition.

Perhaps you've lost some fitness, haven't exercised for years or simply feel as though what used to work for you isn't working in quite the same way anymore.

But there's one problem…

You haven't got a clue where to start.

If you're looking for strength training around St Ives, Huntingdon or the surrounding Cambridgeshire area, this is for you.

Because lifting weights really doesn't need to be intimidating.

Why strength training?

For me, getting stronger isn't just about how your body looks.

Strength is useful.

It's carrying your shopping without struggling.

Getting up from the floor.

Lifting something heavy at home.

Climbing stairs.

Gardening.

Travelling.

Keeping up with family.

Feeling capable.

And having the confidence that your body can actually DO things.

That's why I think strength deserves a place in women's fitness at every age.

“But I've never lifted weights before”

Perfectly fine.

You don't need previous experience.

You certainly don't have to get stronger before you start a weights class.

That's a bit like saying you need to learn to swim before having swimming lessons. 😂

Everybody starts somewhere.

One woman might begin with bodyweight exercises.

Another might use 3kg dumbbells.

Someone else may already feel comfortable using much heavier weights.

None of those starting points is better than another.

Your job is to start at the level that's right for you.

What does a beginner strength workout actually look like?

It doesn't have to involve dozens of complicated exercises or enormous gym machines.

A simple full-body session could include movements such as:

- Squats

- Deadlifts or hip-hinge movements

- Rows

- Chest presses

- Shoulder presses

- Lunges or split squats

- Core exercises

These movements can then be adapted according to your ability and experience.

Simple works.

How heavy should women lift?

This is probably one of the questions I hear most.

And there's no magic women's dumbbell weight.

Your muscles don't know whether a dumbbell says 4kg, 8kg or 12kg on the side.

They respond to the challenge you're giving them.

You want a weight you can control safely and with good technique — but one that eventually becomes challenging.

If you finish an exercise feeling as though you could happily do another 30 repetitions, there's probably room to progress.

As your strength improves, your weights should be able to progress too.

Don't be afraid of getting stronger

A lot of women have spent years approaching exercise mainly as a way to burn calories.

How many calories did the workout burn?

How sweaty was I?

What does the scale say?

Strength training can give you a completely different focus.

Suddenly you start noticing:

I lifted heavier today.

That exercise feels easier.

My technique has improved.

I couldn't do that six weeks ago.

And I LOVE that.

Because your body becomes something you're working WITH rather than constantly trying to make smaller.

What if you're nervous about joining a gym?

You're definitely not alone.

The gym weights area can feel intimidating when you don't know where anything is or what you're supposed to be doing.

That's one of the reasons I created Women on Weights.

It's about giving women the opportunity to learn.

How to perform the exercises.

How to choose an appropriate weight.

How to challenge themselves.

How to progress.

And most importantly — how to become confident enough that lifting weights doesn't feel like something that belongs to somebody else.

Strength training doesn't mean everybody doing the same thing

One of the things I really want women to understand is that you don't need to keep up with anybody.

In my sessions, women work at their own level.

Someone new to weights may be learning an exercise with a light dumbbell.

The woman next to her may be using a considerably heavier one.

Both can be working hard.

Both can be progressing.

Both belong there.

Fitness should meet you where you are.

How often should you strength train?

You don't have to start training five days a week.

For many women, two full-body strength sessions a week can be a really manageable starting point.

Once you've established the habit, you can build from there if you want to.

You can combine strength work with walking, classes, cycling, swimming, running or whatever other movement you enjoy.

It doesn't need to take over your life.

“Am I too old to start?”

No.

And please don't write yourself off because you didn't start ten or twenty years ago.

You can't change when you started.

You CAN change what happens next.

Imagine how different you could feel six months from now if you started building your strength today.

Not just how you might look.

How you MOVE.

How you feel.

How confident you are.

What you're capable of.

That's worth investing in.
