Protein Powder- Do You Actually Need One

Protein Powders: Do You Really Need One?

Evidence-based. Practical. No fads.

Helping you make informed choices without the confusion.

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

Protein powders are one of the supplements I'm asked about more than any other.

"Which one should I buy?"

"Are supermarket brands any good?"

"Do I actually need one?"

The answer might surprise you...

For most people, protein powder isn't essential.

But for some, it can be a really useful tool.

Let's take a closer look.

What is a protein powder?

Protein powder is exactly what the name suggests...

It's simply a concentrated source of protein that's designed to supplement your diet, not replace it.

It shouldn't replace nutritious meals, but it can be a quick, convenient option when life gets busy or you're struggling to eat enough protein.

Why is protein so important after 40?

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, maintaining muscle becomes even more important.

Eating enough protein, alongside regular strength training, can help:

💪 Maintain muscle mass

🦴 Support bone health

😊 Keep you fuller for longer

⚡ Improve recovery after exercise

❤️ Support healthy ageing and independence

Many women simply aren't eating enough.

Whole foods first... always

Before buying a protein powder, focus on increasing protein from everyday foods.

Some of my favourites include:

Chicken

Turkey

Fish

Eggs

Greek yoghurt

Cottage cheese

Lean beef

Tofu

Edamame beans

Lentils

Chickpeas

These provide protein along with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that powders simply can't.

When can protein powder be useful?

Protein powder can be a great option if you:

✔️ Skip meals

✔️ Are always rushing around

✔️ Struggle to hit your daily protein target

✔️ Need something convenient after a workout

✔️ Don't feel hungry after exercising

It's about making life easier—not replacing healthy eating.

What should you look for?

Don't be distracted by clever marketing or flashy packaging.

Instead, check for:

✅ Around 20–30g protein per serving

✅ A relatively short ingredient list

✅ Low added sugar

✅ A flavour you'll actually enjoy

What ingredients should you be aware of?

Many flavoured protein powders contain ingredients such as:

Artificial sweeteners (sucralose or acesulfame-K)

Flavourings

Thickeners

Emulsifiers

These aren't necessarily harmful, but if you prefer a cleaner ingredient list it's worth comparing labels before you buy.

Are supermarket brands OK?

Absolutely.

Brands such as MyProtein, Bulk, USN, Optimum Nutrition and even supermarket own-brand powders can all help you increase your protein intake.

Many simply contain a few more flavourings or sweeteners than premium brands.

If they fit your budget and help you consistently hit your protein target, they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do.

My Top Picks

🥇 Premium Choice

Vilgain Grass-Fed Whey

If quality is your priority, this would be my first choice.

✔️ Grass-fed whey

✔️ Minimal ingredients

✔️ Great taste

✔️ Excellent quality

Perfect if you prefer a cleaner ingredient list.

🥈 Best All-Rounder

MyProtein Impact Whey

Probably the best balance of quality and price.

✔️ Reliable quality

✔️ Huge range of flavours

✔️ Frequently on offer

✔️ Great value for money

An excellent choice for most people.

🥉 Best Budget Option

Bulk Pure Whey (Unflavoured)

If you're trying to keep costs down without compromising on protein.

✔️ Great value

✔️ Good protein content

✔️ Simple ingredient list

✔️ Easy to mix into smoothies or yoghurt

Andrea's Takeaway

Please don't overthink it.

The "perfect" protein powder doesn't exist.

The best one is the one that:

✔️ Fits your budget.

✔️ Helps you hit your daily protein target.

✔️ You'll actually use consistently.

Remember...

🥩 Whole foods first.

🥤 Protein powder second.

Small, consistent habits will always have a bigger impact than chasing the "perfect" supplement.

Consistency beats perfection.

Have a fantastic week.
