Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought...
"I'm eating well."
"I'm exercising."
"I'm doing everything I know I should be doing..."
"So why can't I lose belly fat?"
If you've ever searched "how to lose belly fat during menopause" or "why am I gaining weight around my middle after 40?", you're certainly not alone.
It's one of the questions I'm asked most as a women's health coach.
It's also a question I've asked myself.
As women move through perimenopause and menopause, many notice a frustrating change. Clothes fit differently. Weight seems to gather around the middle. The things that worked in our 20s and 30s simply don't seem to work anymore.
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something.
You're not failing. Your body is changing.
Why does belly fat increase during menopause?
As oestrogen levels decline, our bodies naturally become more likely to store fat around the abdomen instead of the hips and thighs.
At the same time, we gradually lose muscle mass unless we actively work to maintain it. Muscle is metabolically active, so preserving it becomes increasingly important as we age.
Add disrupted sleep, higher stress levels and the demands of everyday life, and it's easy to see why menopause weight gain can feel so frustrating.
The important thing to remember is this...
This isn't your fault, but there are things you can do that genuinely help.
The biggest mistake I see women make
Most women respond by doing exactly what they've always been told.
Eat less.
Exercise more.
Skip meals.
Cut carbohydrates.
Spend hours doing cardio.
For many women over 40, especially during menopause, these strategies often leave them feeling tired, hungry and frustrated.
I've been there myself.
For years I believed I simply needed more discipline.
Now I realise my body wasn't asking to be punished.
It was asking to be supported.
Think of your health like a leaky bucket
I recently heard an analogy that perfectly describes menopause.
Imagine your health is like a bucket.
Every positive habit pours water into it.
Strength training.
Walking.
Eating enough protein.
Managing stress.
Sleeping well.
Staying hydrated.
But menopause creates a few extra holes.
Hormonal changes.
Poor sleep.
Stress.
Loss of muscle.
Busy lifestyles.
If you only keep pouring more water into the bucket by exercising harder or eating less, you'll eventually become exhausted.
Instead, start plugging the holes.
Build muscle through strength training.
Eat enough protein to support muscle repair and healthy ageing.
Prioritise recovery.
Manage stress where possible.
Walk regularly.
Drink enough water.
Little by little, your bucket begins to fill again.
The question that changed my mindset
Whenever I find myself becoming frustrated with my body, I ask myself one question.
"Where would I be today if I hadn't looked after myself over the last few years?"
If I hadn't started strength training...
If I hadn't made walking a daily habit...
If I hadn't focused on eating enough protein...
Where would I be?
I'd almost certainly feel weaker.
I'd have less energy.
My joints would ache more.
Everyday life would feel harder.
Then I realise something.
I've become so focused on the one thing that hasn't changed as much as I'd like that I've forgotten to celebrate everything that has.
My body has given me two beautiful children.
It allows me to teach fitness classes.
Lift weights.
Go for long walks.
Run my business.
Hug the people I love.
It has carried me through every stage of my life, including menopause.
For that, I'm incredibly grateful.
What really helps reduce menopause belly fat?
There isn't a magic exercise.
There isn't one miracle food.
There isn't a quick fix.
The women I see making the biggest improvements don't chase perfection—they build consistent habits.
That means:
Strength training 2–3 times each week.
Eating enough protein with every meal.
Walking every day.
Prioritising sleep where possible.
Managing stress.
Staying consistent, even when progress feels slow.
These habits won't just help you manage menopause belly fat.
They'll help you become stronger, healthier and more resilient for the years ahead.
Stop fighting your body
Your body isn't the enemy.
It's adapting.
Working hard.
Doing its best.
Perhaps instead of asking...
"Why won't my belly fat shift?"
Try asking...
"Where would I be today if I hadn't looked after myself all these years?"
I think you'll realise you've achieved far more than your reflection sometimes allows you to see.
Your body deserves love.
Respect.
Patience.
Care.
Work with it, not against it.
Because the goal isn't simply to lose belly fat after menopause.
