Beyond The Scales Part 5....When the camera doesn't tell the full story!!

Beyond The Scales Part 5:

When The Camera Doesn't Tell The Full Story

This week I watched a video of myself teaching one of my fitness classes.

And if I'm honest...

My heart sank a little.

It wasn't what I expected to see.

I found myself focusing on angles I didn't like, the things I wished were different and the areas I thought I'd made more progress on.

I even caught myself thinking:

"Is that really what I look like?"

Now before anyone says it, I know a camera only captures a moment in time.

I know angles, lighting and movement can all affect how we appear.

And yet, despite everything I know about health, fitness and body confidence, my first instinct was still to judge myself.

Sound familiar?

I suspect many women reading this have experienced exactly the same thing.

You catch a glimpse of yourself in a photograph, a video or a mirror and suddenly all you can see are the things you'd like to change.

Not your smile.

Not your energy.

Not your achievements.

Just the bits you've convinced yourself aren't good enough.

Why Midlife Can Feel Different

As women in our 40s, 50s and beyond, our bodies naturally change.

Hormones shift.

Muscle mass becomes harder to maintain.

Fat distribution changes.

Our bodies often stop responding the way they did in our 20s and 30s.

For many women, this can have a huge impact on body confidence.

I hear it all the time:

💜 "I don't recognise myself anymore."

💜 "I feel uncomfortable in photos."

💜 "Nothing seems to work."

💜 "I don't feel like me."

I've had those thoughts too.

Which is why I think it's so important that we start talking about them honestly.

Looking Beyond The Image

After my initial reaction, I watched the video again.

This time I tried to look beyond my appearance.

And do you know what I saw?

I saw a woman doing something she loves.

I saw someone helping other women move their bodies and improve their health.

I saw energy.

I saw confidence.

I saw enthusiasm.

I saw nearly 30 years of experience doing the thing I've dedicated my life to.

I saw someone who has navigated menopause, burnout, stress and all the ups and downs that life throws at us.

I saw someone who is still showing up.

Still learning.

Still lifting.

Still growing.

And suddenly, the things I didn't like didn't seem nearly as important.

The Questions We Should Be Asking

Instead of asking:

❌ How do I look?

❌ Have I lost enough weight?

❌ Why don't I look like I used to?

What if we asked:

✅ How do I feel?

✅ Am I stronger than I was six months ago?

✅ Do I have more energy?

✅ Am I looking after my health?

✅ Am I doing things that make me happy?

Because these things matter.

In fact, I'd argue they matter far more than any photograph, video or number on the scales.

What Helps Me When My Confidence Wobbles

If you're struggling with body confidence right now, here are a few things that help me:

💜 Focus on what your body can do rather than just how it looks.

💜 Strength train regularly. Nothing has improved my confidence more than feeling physically strong.

💜 Celebrate consistency instead of perfection.

💜 Stop analysing every photo and video.

💜 Follow people who inspire you rather than make you feel inadequate.

💜 Remember that health is about so much more than body size.

💜 Speak to yourself as kindly as you would a friend.

The Real Measure Of Progress

The scales don't tell the whole story.

Neither does a photograph.

Neither does a video.

Real progress looks like:

✔️ Feeling stronger

✔️ Having more energy

✔️ Sleeping better

✔️ Feeling happier

✔️ Building healthy habits

✔️ Looking after your body

✔️ Showing up for yourself consistently

✔️ Learning to respect yourself at every stage of life

And perhaps that's what Beyond The Scales has really been about all along.

Learning to see ourselves as whole people rather than projects that need fixing.

Because life is too short to spend it worrying about the perfect angle.

I'd much rather be the woman in the video living her life than the woman sitting on the sidelines worrying about how she looks.

And that's something worth remembering.
