BEYOND THE SCALES: The Strongest Thing You Can Wear Is Confidence

Body Confidence for Women Over 40: Confidence Isn’t a Dress Size

One of the biggest things I think we get wrong when it comes to women’s health, fitness and body confidence after 40 is believing confidence is waiting for us somewhere in the future.

When I lose the weight…

When I fit back into those jeans…

When my tummy is flatter…

When I’m a smaller dress size…

Then I’ll feel confident.

But will we?

Because confidence isn’t stitched into the label inside a pair of trousers.

It isn’t hiding underneath a smaller number on the scales.

And it certainly isn’t reserved for women who look a certain way.

Why body confidence can change after 40 and menopause

Our bodies change as we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond.

Menopause, hormones, changes in muscle mass, where we store body fat, sleep, stress and simply having a busy life can all affect the way our bodies look and feel.

And yet so many women are still trying to judge their 50-year-old body against the body they had at 25.

That’s a pretty tough comparison to keep making.

You may still want to lose weight or change your body composition — and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But your health and your confidence deserve to be measured by more than a number.

We’ve been taught to measure progress in numbers

Weight.

Dress size.

Calories.

Steps.

Measurements.

BMI.

There always seems to be another number available to tell us whether we’re doing “well”.

Numbers can sometimes be useful information.

But they become a problem when we allow them to decide how successful we feel.

You can lose weight and still feel self-conscious.

You can drop a dress size and immediately worry about gaining it back.

You can reach the number you thought would finally make you happy and realise you’re still picking yourself apart.

Because body confidence doesn’t automatically arrive with weight loss.

Sometimes we also need to change the way we see progress.

Strength training can build confidence after 40

This is one of the reasons I’m such a huge believer in strength training for women over 40.

There’s something incredibly empowering about gradually realising:

I’m stronger than I thought.

You pick up a heavier dumbbell.

You manage another repetition.

You carry the shopping more easily.

You walk further.

Your balance improves.

Getting up from the floor becomes easier.

You feel fitter climbing the stairs.

These things may never show up on the bathroom scales.

But they can completely change the way you feel about yourself.

Your body stops being something you only judge from the outside…

…and becomes something you appreciate for everything it allows you to do.

Non-scale victories matter

Instead of only asking:

“Have I lost weight?”

Start looking for other signs of progress.

Are you stronger?

Do you have more energy?

Are you sleeping better?

Do you feel fitter?

Are you moving more?

Are you eating enough protein and nourishing your body?

Are you drinking more water?

Do your clothes feel different?

Has your posture improved?

Do you feel more confident walking into an exercise class or gym?

Are you doing things now that you couldn't do six months ago?

These are all non-scale victories.

And some of them will have a much bigger impact on your long-term health than another few pounds disappearing from the scales.

You can want weight loss without hating your body

I think this bit is really important.

Body confidence doesn't mean you have to love every inch of yourself every second of every day.

Some days you might catch yourself in a changing-room mirror and think…

Oh for goodness sake. 😂

That's normal.

You can want to lose some body fat.

You can want to improve your body composition.

You can want your clothes to fit differently.

But you can want those things without constantly criticising yourself along the way.

And if you choose to weigh yourself, that's fine too.

Just don't dismiss all the other evidence that tells you you're becoming healthier, fitter and stronger.

Healthy ageing is about much more than weight

For women over 40, exercise isn't simply about looking different.

Maintaining muscle, strength, mobility, cardiovascular fitness and bone health becomes increasingly important as we get older.

This is why I want more women to move away from exercising purely to burn calories.

Train because you want to be strong enough for the life ahead of you.

Train because you want independence.

Energy.

Confidence.

Mobility.

Health.

And yes — hopefully a body you feel good living in too.

Strong. Capable. Worthy. Enough. YOU.

Before we're a weight, dress size, before photo or after photo…

We're women with families, jobs, friendships, responsibilities, worries, plans and whole lives waiting to be lived.

I don't want any woman waiting until she reaches an imaginary perfect weight before she allows herself to feel good.

Wear the outfit.

Go swimming.

Get in the photograph.

Join the class.

Lift the weights.

Book the holiday.

Look after yourself.

Take up space.

Your confidence doesn't have to wait.

Your body may change along the way — and your goals may change too.

But remember:

Confidence isn't a dress size.

It's knowing you're becoming stronger, healthier, happier and more capable, while giving yourself a little more credit for the woman you already are.
