BEYOND THE SCALES: Who decided your goal weight?

Who Decided Your Goal Weight?

Why it's time to stop chasing a number and start measuring what really matters.

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself a simple question...

Who decided your goal weight?

Was it you?

Or was it a number you saw in a magazine years ago?

A target from a slimming club?

A BMI chart?

The weight you were in your twenties?

Or perhaps it's simply the number you've carried around in your head for years, without ever questioning where it came from.

For so many women, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, a goal weight becomes the measure of success.

"I'll be happy when I get to 10 stone."

"I just want to get back to my pre-baby weight."

"If only I could lose another half a stone."

But here's the thing...

Who says that's the weight your body is meant to be?

Your Body Isn't the Same Body It Was Twenty Years Ago

As women, our bodies naturally change.

Hormones change.

Muscle mass changes.

Bone density changes.

Body composition changes.

Our responsibilities change too.

Many of us have raised children, built careers, cared for ageing parents and spent years putting everyone else first.

Yet somehow, we still expect our bodies to weigh exactly the same as they did decades ago.

It's an expectation that simply isn't realistic.

And more importantly...

It's not necessary.

Why Your Goal Weight Might Be Holding You Back

One of the biggest problems with focusing purely on the scales is that they tell you almost nothing about your health.

The scales can't tell you:

How much stronger you've become.

How much muscle you've built.

Whether your blood pressure has improved.

How well you're sleeping.

How much more energy you have.

How confident you feel.

Whether you're able to keep up with your children or grandchildren.

How much healthier your relationship with food has become.

They simply give you one number.

And yet so many women allow that single number to decide whether they've had a "good" or "bad" week.

The Scales Don't Measure Success

Imagine this...

You've strength trained three times.

You've walked every day.

You've eaten balanced meals.

You've slept better than you have in months.

Your clothes fit more comfortably.

You feel stronger.

You have more energy.

Then you step on the scales...

…and the number hasn't changed.

Suddenly everything feels like a failure.

Nothing else counts.

That isn't a problem with your body.

It's a problem with the way we've been taught to measure success.

A Better Question to Ask Yourself

Instead of asking:

"What do I want to weigh?"

Try asking yourself:

How do I want to feel?

How strong do I want to become?

What do I want my body to be capable of?

How do I want to age?

What habits do I want to build?

What kind of example do I want to set for my family?

Those questions change everything.

Because they shift the focus from appearance to health.

From restriction to nourishment.

From punishment to self-care.

This Is What "Beyond the Scales" Means

This idea is at the heart of Beyond the Scales.

It's about helping women stop letting a number on the bathroom floor dictate their confidence, mood and self-worth.

It's about celebrating progress that can't always be measured in kilograms.

It's about recognising that success might look like:

✔️ Walking upstairs without getting out of breath.

✔️ Feeling stronger every week.

✔️ Sleeping through the night.

✔️ Having more confidence.

✔️ Saying yes to photos.

✔️ Having the energy to enjoy life.

✔️ Feeling comfortable in your own skin.

Those things matter far more than a number ever will.

Final Thoughts

If you're constantly chasing a goal weight, perhaps it's time to pause and ask yourself one final question...

Who decided that number?

And more importantly...

Is it still serving you?

Maybe the goal was never to become lighter.

Maybe the goal was always to become stronger, healthier and happier.

Because your worth has never been measured in kilograms.

And your success shouldn't be either.
