Is This Anxiety… Or My Hormones? The Truth About Anxiety in Women Over 40
If you’ve been feeling anxious lately—and you can’t quite explain why—you are not alone.
Maybe it’s come out of nowhere.
Maybe you’ve never struggled with anxiety before.
Or maybe it just feels different now… stronger, more frequent, harder to shake.
You might be asking yourself:
“Is this anxiety… or is it my hormones?”
As a women’s health coach and someone who has personally experienced this recently, I want to talk about it honestly—because more women over 40 are dealing with anxiety than ever before.
And most of them don’t realise why.
Why Anxiety Increases in Women Over 40
One of the most common but misunderstood symptoms of perimenopause and menopause is anxiety.
As we move into our 40s and 50s, key hormones like oestrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate.
These hormones don’t just affect your reproductive system—they have a direct impact on:
Brain chemistry
Mood regulation
Stress response
Sleep quality
Emotional resilience
When oestrogen drops, it can affect serotonin (your “feel good” hormone).
When progesterone fluctuates, it can impact your ability to feel calm and relaxed.
The result?
👉 Increased anxiety
👉 Feeling on edge for no reason
👉 Racing thoughts
👉 Poor sleep
👉 Low mood or overwhelm
So if you’re thinking, “Why do I suddenly feel anxious all the time?”
There is a real, physiological reason for it.
Is It Hormones… Or Lifestyle?
Here’s the truth most people won’t tell you:
It’s usually both.
Hormonal changes create the foundation—but your lifestyle can either support you… or make it worse.
Many women over 40 are juggling:
Busy careers
Family responsibilities
Lack of sleep
High stress levels
Skipping meals or under-eating
Too much caffeine
Little time for themselves
Sound familiar?
This combination creates what I call the “perfect storm for anxiety.”
And I see it all the time in the women I coach.
My Personal Experience With Anxiety (And Why I’m Sharing This)
I want to be honest with you…
Recently, I’ve experienced anxiety myself.
That unsettled, on-edge feeling.
The racing thoughts.
The sense that something isn’t quite right—even when everything is.
And I’ll be honest…
It’s horrible.
But it also made me stop and reflect.
Because even with all the knowledge I have around fitness, health and wellbeing…
I still needed to come back to the basics.
And that’s what I want to help you do too.
How To Reduce Anxiety Naturally (For Women Over 40)
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life.
But small, consistent changes can make a huge difference to your nervous system and overall wellbeing.
1. Prioritise Gentle Movement
Exercise is powerful—but high-intensity training all the time can increase stress hormones.
Balance it with:
Walking
Pilates
Stretching
Mobility work
2. Support Your Nervous System
Your body needs signals that it is safe.
Simple practices like:
Deep breathing
Slowing down
Taking breaks
Being present
…can help bring you out of “fight or flight” mode.
3. Eat To Support Hormones
Skipping meals or under-eating can increase cortisol (your stress hormone).
Focus on:
Regular meals
Protein intake
Nutrient-dense foods
Stable blood sugar
4. Reduce Stimulants
Caffeine and alcohol can make anxiety symptoms worse—especially during perimenopause.
Even small changes here can have a big impact.
5. Create Space For You
This is the one most women avoid…
But it’s often the one you need the most.
Time to rest.
Time to reset.
Time to breathe.
