The Fear of Calories: Why Undereating After 40 Is Holding You Back š
If youāre a woman over 40 trying to feel fitter, leaner and healthier, chances are calories feel⦠confusing.
You might recognise these thoughts š
āļø āIām scared of eating too much.ā
āļø āWhat if I undo my progress?ā
āļø āI should probably cut back again.ā
If thatās you, let me say this clearly:
š You are not broken
š You are not failing
š You are responding exactly as diet culture trained you to
And I get it ā because I was exactly the same.
Why So Many Women Are Afraid of Calories š
Most women didnāt wake up one day afraid of food.
We were taught to be.
For decades weāve been told:
Eat less
Cut calories
Burn it off
Be āgoodā
Shrink yourself
So when we reach our 40s and 50s and start fuelling properly ā eating regular meals, prioritising protein, lifting weights ā it can feel wrong.
Even scary.
But that fear doesnāt mean youāre doing something bad.
It means your mindset is catching up with a healthier way of doing things.
Why Chronic Undereating After 40 Is a Recipe for Disaster šØ
Hereās the hard truth most women are never told:
š Chronic undereating does more harm than good ā especially after 40.
When calories stay too low for too long, your body adapts to protect you.
This can lead to:
Slower metabolism
Low energy and constant fatigue
Increased cravings and binge cycles
Hormonal disruption
Poor recovery from exercise
Plateaus despite ādoing everything rightā
And then we blame ourselves.
But the problem isnāt willpower ā itās under-fuelling.
Calories Are Not a Moral Score š½ļø
One of the biggest mindset shifts I teach is this:
⨠Calories are information ā not a judgement.
They help us understand:
Are you fuelling your workouts?
Are you supporting muscle and bone health?
Are you helping your body feel safe enough to let go of fat?
Eating more appropriately does not mean losing control.
It means giving your body what it needs to function properly.
Why Progress Can Feel Slower When Youāre Doing It Right š§
This part trips a lot of women up.
When you stop restricting and start fuelling:
The scale may stall or fluctuate
Weight loss may slow initially
Strength improves before fat loss shows
Your body may hold water temporarily
This is often the point women panic and think: ā āI need to eat less.ā
But very often, this is where things are finally starting to work ā just in a healthier, more sustainable way.
Consistency Beats Restriction (Every Time) šŖ
Real life doesnāt need perfect calorie targets.
It looks like:
Eating enough most days
Prioritising protein
Not panicking over one higher day
Getting back on track without guilt
Trusting the process
Thatās how confidence, energy and long-term results are built.
A Simple Reframe to Try This Week š
Instead of asking:
ā āAm I eating too many calories?ā
Try asking:
ā āAm I fuelling my body to feel strong, energised and consistent?ā
Because the goal isnāt to eat as little as possible.
The goal is to:
Feel good
Train well
Recover properly
Build habits that actually last
Final Thought (Because You Might Need This š)
If calories scare you, itās usually because you care ā not because youāre doing something wrong.
But constantly cutting back, doubting yourself and fearing food is what keeps so many women stuck.
You donāt need less food.
You need better support, better information and more trust in your body.
And if youāre learning to fuel without fear ā youāre already making progress āØ
