Why am I gaining Weight Even Though I'm Doing Everything Right?

This is probably one of the biggest conversations I’m having with women over 40 right now…

“I don’t understand it.”

“I’m eating well.”

“I’m exercising.”

“I’m trying.”

“So WHY am I gaining weight?”

And honestly?

I completely understand the frustration because I’ve been feeling it myself too.

You start questioning everything:

Am I eating too much?

Am I not training hard enough?

Is my metabolism broken?

Why did things work before but not now?

Why does my body suddenly feel so different?

And the hardest part?

You often end up blaming yourself.

But here’s what I really want women to understand…

Your body after 40 is NOT the same body you had at 25.

And that’s not failure. That’s biology.

Hormones Change EVERYTHING

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, hormone changes can impact:

fat storage

hunger

energy

sleep

recovery

stress levels

muscle mass

insulin sensitivity

Many women notice:

more weight around the middle

feeling “softer”

increased bloating

slower recovery

lower energy

more fatigue

poorer sleep

struggling to lose weight despite doing all the “right things”

Sound familiar?

This doesn’t mean you’re lazy. It doesn’t mean you’ve “let yourself go.”

It means your body needs a different approach now.

Stress & Cortisol Matter More Than You Think

One thing I think many women underestimate is stress.

And I’m not just talking emotional stress.

I’m talking:

under-eating

overtraining

poor sleep

rushing around constantly

never resting

constantly dieting

emotional pressure around body image

trying to do everything perfectly

Your body doesn’t separate those stressors.

It just sees STRESS.

And chronically elevated stress hormones can impact:

fat storage

cravings

sleep

energy

recovery

inflammation

water retention

Sometimes the answer isn’t “work harder.”

Sometimes the answer is:

sleep more

recover better

walk more

strength train smarter

nourish your body properly

stop punishing yourself

Eating Less Isn’t Always Better

This one can be hard to hear.

Many women over 40 are actually under-fuelling while simultaneously expecting their body to perform better.

Years of dieting can leave women stuck in cycles of:

restriction

overeating

guilt

starting again every Monday

And often? The body adapts.

Metabolism slows. Energy drops. Recovery worsens. Muscle mass decreases.

Then women think: “I need to eat even LESS.”

But sometimes what the body actually needs is:

more protein

more nutrients

better recovery

more muscle

more balance

less extremes

Muscle Becomes MORE Important After 40

One of the most powerful things women can do as they age is strength train.

Not just for aesthetics… But for:

metabolism

bone health

hormones

confidence

posture

mobility

independence later in life

Muscle is protective.

And building muscle after 40 isn’t about becoming bulky.

It’s about becoming resilient.

The Scale Isn’t The Whole Story

This is something I’m personally learning too.

Because it’s very easy to allow a number on the scales to dictate:

your mood

your confidence

your self-worth

whether you think you’re “doing well”

But health is SO much more than weight.

Ask yourself:

Are you stronger?

Are you fitter?

Is your mindset improving?

Are you looking after yourself more consistently?

Are you building habits?

Are you future-proofing your body?

Those things matter.

A LOT.

Maybe We Need A Different Conversation

Maybe women over 40 don’t need more punishment.

Maybe we need:

more education

more support

more realistic expectations

more strength training

more nourishment

more recovery

more compassion

And maybe… just maybe… your body isn’t fighting against you.

Maybe it’s asking you to listen differently ❤️
