I’m going to be honest… this is something I’ve personally struggled with too.
As a women’s fitness coach, people probably assume I’ve always found it easy to stay in shape, maintain my weight and feel confident in my body.
But when I hit perimenopause and then menopause, things changed.
And honestly?
It completely threw me at first.
I found myself doing all the things that had “worked” before:
eating less
training harder
trying to be stricter
cutting back more
…but instead of feeling leaner and more energised, I felt:
exhausted
frustrated
puffy
inflamed
hungry
emotional
uncomfortable in my own skin
And the weight — especially menopause belly fat — seemed harder than ever to shift.

One of the biggest frustrations women over 40 face is menopause weight gain despite eating less. And it can really mess with your confidence when you feel like your body suddenly isn’t responding the way it used to.
But here’s what I’ve learned…
Your body is not broken.

And once I stopped fighting my body and started supporting it differently, everything began to change.
Why Does Menopause Cause Weight Gain?
During perimenopause and menopause, hormones — especially estrogen — begin to fluctuate and decline.
This can affect:
fat storage
sleep
cravings
metabolism
energy levels
stress hormones
muscle mass
recovery
Many women notice:

✅ low motivation

The Estrogen Decline Nobody Really Explains
Here’s something I found absolutely fascinating when I started learning more about menopause hormones and weight gain…
As estrogen levels decline during menopause, the body sometimes tries to compensate.
And do you know where estrogen can also be produced?
Fat cells.
Wild eh!!!
Your body can literally hold onto fat — particularly around the stomach area — as a protective mechanism to help support estrogen production.
So while you’re desperately trying to lose weight, your body may actually be thinking:
“Hang on… we might need this.”
Now obviously it’s more complex than that, and it doesn’t mean fat loss is impossible at all.
But understanding this helped me stop feeling like my body was “failing.”
It made me realise:
hormones matter
stress matters
sleep matters
muscle matters
nourishment matters
And that menopause weight loss needs a different approach than it did in our 20s and 30s.
Menopause Belly Fat Is Real
One of the things I noticed most was how my body shape changed.
Fat seemed to collect around my middle more easily, even when my habits hadn’t massively changed.
This is incredibly common during menopause.
As estrogen declines, women often store more fat around the abdomen rather than the hips and thighs.
Add in stress, poor sleep, busy lives, emotional load and years of dieting… and it becomes the perfect storm.
And I see this all the time now with the women I coach.
Women who:
barely sit down all day
put everyone else first
skip meals
survive on caffeine
try to “be good”
feel guilty eating more
…and still wonder why the weight won’t budge.
The Big Thing Nobody Talks About: Muscle Loss
This was a HUGE wake-up call for me.
As women age, we naturally lose muscle mass unless we actively work to maintain it.
This muscle loss can:
slow metabolism
affect strength
reduce energy
impact body composition
make fat loss harder
Which is exactly why strength training for women over 40 matters so much.
And no — lifting weights does NOT make you bulky.
In fact, weight training helped me:
✅ feel stronger
✅ improve my energy
✅ feel more toned
✅ boost confidence
✅ support my metabolism
✅ feel more capable again
Honestly, strength training became less about shrinking myself… and more about rebuilding myself.
Eating Less Isn’t Always The Answer
This was another hard lesson for me.
For years, many of us were taught:
“Just eat less.”
But constantly under-eating can actually make things worse during menopause.
I realised I needed:
more protein
better recovery
more nourishment
less punishment
Once I started fuelling my body properly instead of constantly trying to restrict it, I began to feel SO much better.
More energy.
Better workouts.
Less cravings.
Better mindset.
What Actually Helped Me
Here’s what genuinely made the biggest difference for me personally:
Strength Training
This changed everything.
Not endless cardio.
Not punishing workouts.
Simple, consistent strength training.
Prioritising Protein
I started paying attention to protein intake and realised I’d probably been under-eating protein for years.
This helped massively with:
fullness
recovery
energy
body composition
Walking More
Walking became less about “burning calories” and more about:
clearing my head
reducing stress
improving mood
supporting fat loss naturally
Managing Stress
This one is massive.
Stress and cortisol can hugely impact hormonal weight gain.
Sometimes women don’t need MORE intensity.
They need more balance.
Consistency Over Perfection
This is probably the biggest lesson menopause taught me.
Not all-or-nothing.
Not starting over every Monday.
Just consistently showing up.
Even imperfectly.
Women Over 40 Weight Loss Needs A Different Approach
