If you’re a woman over 40 and you’ve noticed more weight sitting around your middle — even though you haven’t changed much — you are absolutely not alone.

This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from women in their 40s and 50s.

I’ve been there myself.

And here’s the truth — it’s not just about willpower, and it’s not because you’re doing something wrong.

Your body is changing.

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, several key things happen:

1. Hormones Shift (Especially Oestrogen)

Lower oestrogen levels can lead to more fat being stored around the abdomen instead of hips and thighs.

👉 This is why your body shape may start to change — even if your weight hasn’t massively increased.

2. Muscle Mass Naturally Declines

From around age 30–40, we start to lose muscle unless we actively work to maintain it.

Less muscle = slower metabolism

👉 Meaning your body burns fewer calories at rest.

3. Increased Stress & Cortisol

Midlife often comes with:

busy schedules

poor sleep

higher stress

Elevated cortisol levels are linked to increased belly fat storage.

4. Dieting History & Metabolism Damage

Years of:

yo-yo dieting

low-calorie plans

cutting carbs

👉 can leave your metabolism sluggish and your body holding onto fat.

Endless cardio

Eating as little as possible

Cutting out entire food groups

Obsessing over the scales

This is where everything shifts — and where I’ve seen the biggest results (personally and with my clients).

💪 1. Strength Training Is Non-Negotiable

If you do one thing — make it this.

Strength training helps to:

rebuild muscle

boost metabolism

improve body shape

support hormone health

👉 Aim for 2–3 sessions per week

This is a key part of everything I coach inside my programmes.

🍗 2. Prioritise Protein

Many women are massively under-eating protein.

Protein helps:

maintain muscle

keep you fuller for longer

support fat loss

👉 Aim for 20–30g per meal

🚶‍♀️ 3. Increase Daily Movement (Without Overdoing It)

You don’t need to smash yourself with workouts every day.

But you do need to move more.

👉 Daily steps, walking, staying active

👉 This is one of the most underrated fat loss tools

🧘‍♀️ 4. Manage Stress & Support Your Nervous System

This is HUGE and often overlooked.

Think:

breathwork

Pilates

stretching

time to switch off

👉 Your body won’t let go of fat if it feels constantly stressed

😴 5. Sleep Matters More Than You Think

Poor sleep = increased hunger hormones + fat storage

👉 Aim for 7–8 hours where possible

🧡 My Honest Experience

In my late 40s, I felt this shift massively.

What used to work… stopped working.

I had to change my approach:

less punishment

more structure

more strength training

better nutrition

more understanding of my body

And honestly?

I now feel stronger, leaner and more in control than I have in years.
