Weight Training for Women: Why Every Woman Should Lift Weights After 40
If someone had told me 20 years ago that I'd be encouraging women to lift weights, I probably wouldn't have believed them!
Like many women, I used to think weight training was for bodybuilders or people who wanted to build big muscles.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
Now, if there's one thing I wish every woman over 40 would do, it's start strength training.
Not because it will make you smaller.
Not because it will make you look a certain way.
But because it will help you become stronger, healthier and more confident for the years ahead.
Your Body Changes... So Should Your Approach
As we get older, especially during perimenopause and menopause, our bodies naturally change.
We gradually lose muscle, our metabolism slows down, our bones become more fragile and many of us notice that our body shape changes too.
It's frustrating.
You can feel like you're doing everything you used to do, but your body isn't responding in the same way.
The good news is that strength training is one of the best ways to support your body through these changes.
Here are five reasons I believe every woman should lift weights...
💪 1. Build and Maintain Muscle
From our 30s onwards, we naturally start to lose muscle.
Strength training helps you build and maintain it, making everyday life easier and helping you stay active and independent for years to come.
🔥 2. Support a Healthy Metabolism
Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, meaning it uses more energy, even when you're resting.
Weight training won't magically melt body fat away, but it can help improve your body composition and support a healthy metabolism.
🦴 3. Strengthen Your Bones
As oestrogen levels decline, our risk of osteoporosis increases.
Strength training places healthy stress on your bones, encouraging them to stay strong and helping reduce the risk of fractures later in life.
🛍️ 4. Make Everyday Life Easier
This is one of my favourites.
Carrying shopping.
Lifting grandchildren.
Getting up from the floor.
Gardening.
Moving furniture.
Walking upstairs without getting out of breath.
Strength training isn't just about the gym.
It's about making everyday life feel easier.
❤️ 5. Boost Your Confidence
This is the one nobody talks about enough.
There is something incredibly empowering about feeling strong.
It's not just about what you see in the mirror.
It's about trusting your body.
Believing in yourself.
Walking taller.
Trying new things.
Realising you're capable of far more than you ever imagined.
"But I Don't Want to Get Bulky..."
This is probably the most common thing I hear.
The reality is that most women simply don't have the hormone levels needed to build large amounts of muscle.
What usually happens is that women become stronger, firmer and often notice their clothes fitting better.
Many even change their body shape without seeing a huge difference on the scales.
That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping women look beyond the scales and celebrate all the other signs of progress.
It's Never Too Late
Whether you're 42 or 72...
Whether you've never picked up a dumbbell before...
Whether you've been away from exercise for years...
You can start.
You don't have to be fit.
You don't have to know what you're doing.
You just need to take that first step.
Because every strong woman started as a beginner.
