Why Step Is Still One of My Favourite Workouts

Fun, effective, adaptable… and definitely not stuck in the 90s.

I’ve taught a LOT of different classes over the years.

Strength. HIIT. Spinning. Body Pump. Clubbercise. Totally Shredded. Pilates. Old Skool aerobics… the list goes on.

But there’s something about Step that I’ve always loved.

Maybe it’s the music.

Maybe it’s the feeling when a combination suddenly clicks.

Maybe it’s because you can walk into a class with a million things going around your head and, 45 minutes later, realise you haven’t thought about any of them.

Or maybe it’s simply because Step is a really blooming good workout. 😂

And this September, I’m bringing it back with four different Step sessions at AG Fitness & Health.

So… what actually is Step?

At its simplest, Step is a cardio workout using a raised platform.

You step up, down and around the step using different movements and combinations, all set to music.

But don’t panic at the word “choreography”.

You absolutely do not need to be coordinated, know the moves beforehand or spend the whole class trying to remember an eight-minute routine.

My classes are about moving, enjoying yourself and getting a brilliant workout.

I build things gradually, give options and encourage you to work at your level.

And yes… occasionally we may all end up facing the wrong direction. 😂

That’s part of the fun.

Why I love Step for women in midlife

There are so many benefits to strength training during our 40s, 50s and beyond — and I talk about that a LOT.

But cardiovascular fitness matters too.

Our hearts need training.

Our lungs need training.

Our coordination, balance and agility matter.

And sometimes we just need exercise that makes us feel good.

Step can give you all of that.

It can help improve your cardiovascular fitness and stamina while also challenging your legs, glutes, coordination and balance.

And because the height of the step and intensity of the movements can be adjusted, you don't have to work at the same level as the person next to you.

You make the workout yours.

There’s another benefit we don’t talk about enough…

Your brain gets a workout too.

Following movements, learning simple combinations and coordinating your arms and legs means you have to concentrate.

And I actually LOVE that.

Because for 45 minutes, you're not thinking about the shopping.

Or work.

Or the washing.

Or what everyone else needs from you.

You're thinking:

"What foot am I on?" 😂

And sometimes that little break from everything else is exactly what we need.

Exercise is allowed to be FUN

This one matters to me.

We can get terribly serious about health and fitness.

How many calories did I burn?

Was my heart rate high enough?

Did I lift enough weight?

Did I do enough?

But movement doesn't always have to be about chasing a result.

Sometimes you can exercise because you love the music.

Because you like seeing people.

Because it lifts your mood.

Because you walk out feeling better than when you walked in.

Enjoyment is a perfectly valid reason to exercise.

In fact, I’d argue it's one of the most important ones.

Because when you genuinely enjoy something, you're far more likely to keep doing it.

Step at AG Fitness this September

I'm mixing things up each week so every session has a slightly different flavour:

🩷 8 September – Feel Good Step

Pure feel-good cardio, great music and plenty of movement.

🧡 15 September – Step & Tone

Step cardio combined with toning and strengthening work.

💛 22 September – Step & Core

Step plus focused core work.

❤️ 29 September – Power Step

A slightly punchier session with options to turn things up if you want them.

Classes are Tuesdays, 6.30–7.15pm at Wyton on the Hill Primary School.

And if you've always fancied trying Step but feel nervous about walking into a class without knowing what you're doing, I'm also running an:

INTRODUCTION TO STEP

📅 Tuesday 1 September

⏰ 6.15–7pm

📍 Houghton Memorial Hall

That one is specifically designed to help you learn the basics without any pressure.

You don't need to be fit first.

You don't need to be coordinated.

And you definitely don't need to have done Step before.

Just come along, move your body and have a go.

Because after all these years teaching fitness, one thing I know for certain is…

The best exercise isn't necessarily the fanciest or the hardest.

It's the one that makes you want to come back and do it again.

And Step still does that for me. 🧡
