Women Work Better When Fed

Why Fuel, Not Restriction, Is the Missing Piece for Women Over 40

For years, many women over 40 — myself included — have been caught in diet culture.

Eat less.

Cut carbs.

Burn it off.

Be “good”.

Low-calorie plans, low-fat phases, Atkins, Keto, Slimming Clubs, quick fixes and endless restarts. We were taught that restriction equalled discipline and that hunger was something to be proud of.

But here’s the truth:

Women do not thrive when under-fuelled.

And after 40, restriction doesn’t just stop working — it actively works against us.

What Changes After 40 (And Why the Old Rules Stop Working)

Somewhere in my late 40s — maybe earlier — things started to feel harder.

Energy dipped.

Mood became unpredictable.

Sleep suffered.

Brain fog crept in.

Training felt heavier.

Weight crept on despite “doing everything right”.

And underneath all of it sat a quiet, constant fear —

the fear of eating too many calories.

I was always looking for ways to cut back. Eating a little less. Skipping meals. Holding back, just in case. It felt sensible. Controlled. Responsible.

But it wasn’t helping.

Hormonal changes through perimenopause and menopause change how our bodies respond to food, stress and exercise. What worked in our 30s often backfires in our 40s and 50s — yet many women respond by tightening the reins even more.

That combination — hormonal change plus restriction — is a recipe for disaster.

Fuel Is Information, Not Just Calories

Food isn’t just energy — it’s information for your body.

When you consistently under-eat, especially protein and carbohydrates, your body perceives stress. And a stressed body will:

Hold onto fat

Break down muscle

Slow metabolism

Disrupt sleep

Increase fatigue and anxiety

Make exercise feel exhausting instead of empowering

Ironically, the very thing many women fear — weight gain, loss of control, feeling worse — often happens because they aren’t eating enough.

Your brain 🧠 and body 💪 need fuel to function — not restriction.

The Shift That Changed Everything

By the end of 2025, I finally said enough.

I couldn’t keep pushing through fatigue and frustration while quietly fearing food. I needed proper support — and I turned to two phenomenal coaches, Kelly Reed and Jason Rose, who helped me rethink how I fuel, train and care for my body.

One sentence landed louder than anything else:

Simple.

True.

Life-changing.

Instead of chasing less, I started fuelling for energy, strength, recovery and hormones — especially in this post-menopausal phase of life.

Over the last year, I haven’t just “got my old self back” — I’ve become a stronger, fitter, calmer and more capable version of myself.

Not by eating less.

But by eating better.

Eating more strategically didn’t make things worse. It allowed my body to finally feel safe. And when the body feels safe, everything works better — hormones, metabolism, mood, training and recovery.

The Message Every Woman 40+ Needs to Hear

You don’t need another restrictive plan.

You don’t need to earn your food.

You don’t need to fear calories.

You need:

Enough fuel

Enough protein

Enough carbohydrates

Enough consistency
