Gratitude for Mental Health and Wellbeing
A Simple Habit That Can Improve Mood, Reduce Stress and Boost Energy
At AG Fitness & Health in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, we often talk about the importance of exercise, nutrition, strength training, hormones and healthy daily habits.
All of these play a huge role in our health, energy levels and overall wellbeing, especially for women navigating midlife, perimenopause and menopause.
But there is something else that can have a surprisingly powerful impact on how we feel every day.
Gratitude.
It might sound like a small thing, but research consistently shows that practising gratitude can help improve mental wellbeing, reduce stress and even support physical health.
When we regularly focus on what is going well in our lives, we actually begin to train the brain to notice more positive experiences.
And that can change the way we feel day to day.
Why Gratitude Is So Powerful
Our brains naturally have what scientists call a negativity bias.
This means we tend to notice problems, stress and potential threats more easily than positive experiences.
Thousands of years ago this helped humans survive by spotting danger quickly. But in modern life it often leads to overthinking, worry and unnecessary stress.
Gratitude gently shifts the brain’s attention in the opposite direction.
It encourages us to notice:
• positive moments
• small wins
• supportive relationships
• everyday experiences we often overlook
Over time this helps the brain develop a more balanced and optimistic mindset.
How Gratitude Affects Brain Chemistry
Gratitude also influences several important chemicals in the brain that affect mood and wellbeing.
Dopamine
Often known as the reward chemical, dopamine is released when we reflect on something positive. This helps increase motivation and feelings of pleasure.
Serotonin
Serotonin helps regulate mood and emotional wellbeing. Gratitude practices can support serotonin activity, which promotes calmness and emotional balance.
Oxytocin
Sometimes called the bonding hormone, oxytocin increases when we express appreciation to others. This strengthens relationships and feelings of connection.
Gratitude can also help reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.
Together these changes help shift the body into a calmer and more positive state.
Gratitude and the Brain: The Power of Neuroplasticity
The brain has an incredible ability to adapt and change through a process called neuroplasticity.
The thoughts and behaviours we repeat regularly actually strengthen certain neural pathways.
If we constantly focus on stress or negative experiences, those pathways become stronger.
But when we practise gratitude consistently, the brain begins strengthening pathways that help us:
• notice positive moments
• appreciate everyday experiences
• feel more optimistic
• reduce stress and anxiety
Over time, gratitude becomes a natural habit of thinking.
Simple Gratitude Practices You Can Start Today
Gratitude does not need to take a lot of time.
Even one or two minutes a day can begin to shift your mindset.
Here are some simple ways to practise gratitude:
Write Down Three Things
At the end of the day, write down three things you feel grateful for.
They could be:
• a conversation with a friend
• a walk outdoors
• a great workout
• a moment of calm
Small moments matter.
Practise Gratitude During a Walk
When you are out walking — perhaps around St Ives, along the river or in the Cambridgeshire countryside — take a moment to notice the environment around you.
Fresh air, nature and movement can all support mental wellbeing.
Appreciate What Your Body Can Do
Instead of focusing on how your body looks, focus on what it allows you to do.
Strength.
Movement.
Balance.
Energy.
These are powerful things worth appreciating.
Express Gratitude to Someone Else
A simple message or “thank you” can brighten someone’s day and strengthen relationships.
Gratitude shared often multiplies.
Gratitude in Real Life
Yesterday I taught a step class here in St Ives, and it reminded me again why I love what I do.
The music, the energy in the room, the laughter and smiles.
At the end of the class everyone was hugging and chatting. There was such a warm, supportive atmosphere.
Group exercise really does bring people together.
Moments like that remind me how grateful I am to be able to help people feel stronger, healthier and more confident through fitness and wellbeing.
