Beyond The Scales Part 3 The Hormone Detective: What My Test Results Revealed

BEYOND THE SCALES – PART 3

The Hormone Detective: What My Test Results Revealed

There comes a point where you have two choices.

You can keep guessing...

Or you can start gathering information.

That's exactly where I found myself recently.

After months of training consistently, prioritising protein, walking daily, taking care of myself and doing all the things I would normally recommend to my clients, I still felt like something wasn't quite adding up.

I wasn't feeling terrible.

In fact, mentally I felt much stronger than I had a couple of years ago.

But physically?

I still felt like I was working much harder than I should have been for the results I was seeing.

My body composition had changed.

My midsection seemed more resistant.

Building muscle felt harder.

Recovery felt different.

And despite doing "all the right things", I knew there was more to the story.

So instead of assuming it was just menopause, ageing, or something I simply had to accept, I decided to dig a little deeper.

Becoming My Own Hormone Detective

One thing I've learned through working with women over 40 is that symptoms are clues.

Our bodies are always communicating with us.

The problem is that many of us have spent years ignoring the messages.

Pushing through.

Getting on with it.

Telling ourselves we're just tired, stressed or getting older.

But what if those symptoms are trying to tell us something important?

That's why I decided to invest in hormone testing.

Not because I was looking for a magic answer.

Not because I expected one blood test to solve everything.

But because information is empowering.

The more information we have, the better decisions we can make.

The Results

When my results came back, some things weren't particularly surprising.

As a post-menopausal woman, my oestrogen levels were extremelylow.

That's expected.

But what really stood out was my testosterone.

It was sitting right at the bottom end of the range.

Technically still "normal."

But let's be honest...

Normal and optimal are not always the same thing.

When I looked at my symptoms through that lens, a lot started to make sense.

The loss of muscle tone.

Difficulty building strength.

Reduced libido.

Changes in body composition.

Lower drive and motivation at times.

None of these things happen because we're lazy.

They're often linked to genuine physiological changes happening inside the body.

Why This Matters

I think one of the biggest frustrations for women in midlife is being told that everything is "normal."

Because normal doesn't always mean you feel your best.

Many women spend years accepting symptoms because they're told it's simply part of ageing.

But I don't believe we should settle for feeling mediocre if there are ways we can support ourselves better.

That doesn't mean chasing perfection.

It doesn't mean obsessing over every hormone marker.

It simply means being curious.

Asking questions.

Seeking support.

And making informed decisions.

My Next Step

After discussing my results and considering my symptoms, I've made the decision to restart HRT.

It's not a decision I've taken lightly.

And it's certainly not something I think every woman needs.

But for me, it feels like the right next step.

Not because I'm trying to turn back the clock.

Not because I'm chasing a number on the scales.

But because I want to feel strong.

Energetic.

Healthy.

Capable.

I want to give my body the support it may need during this stage of life.

And then see what happens.

The Biggest Lesson So Far

Perhaps the biggest lesson from this whole journey is this:

Your body is not a problem to fix.

It's a puzzle to understand.

Instead of fighting against it, criticising it or punishing it, what if we got curious?

What if we started listening?

What if we stopped judging ourselves solely by the scales and started looking at the bigger picture?

Because health after 40 isn't just about calories, workouts and weight loss.

It's about hormones.

Recovery.

Sleep.

Stress.

Strength.

Nutrition.

Mindset.

And understanding the unique body you're living in.

What's Next?

I've recently restarted HRT and I'm genuinely curious to see what changes I notice over the coming weeks and months.

Will it improve my recovery?

Will it help with muscle building?

Will it improve body composition?

Will it impact my energy and motivation?

I honestly don't know yet.

But I'm excited to find out.

And of course, I'll be sharing the journey with you.

Because if my experience helps even one woman realise she's not imagining things and she's not alone, then it's worth sharing.

This journey was never really about weight loss.

It's about understanding my body.

Supporting my health.

And becoming the strongest, healthiest version of myself for the years ahead.

And that's something no set of scales can measure.
