Why You're Always Tired: Is It Menopause, Stress or Something Else?

Why You're Always Tired: Is It Menopause, Stress or Something Else?

"I'm exhausted all the time."

It's one of the most common things I hear from women over 40.

Not just tired after a busy day...

The kind of tired where you wake up feeling like you haven't slept.

The kind where you struggle to concentrate, lose motivation to exercise and wonder where your energy has gone.

If this sounds familiar, you're certainly not alone.

The good news is that feeling constantly tired isn't something you simply have to accept as part of getting older.

Let's look at some of the most common reasons.

---

1. Hormonal Changes

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, our hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline.

Oestrogen doesn't just affect our periods.

It also plays a role in:

Energy production

Mood

Sleep quality

Muscle recovery

Brain function

At the same time, progesterone declines too, which can make it harder to relax and sleep well.

Even if you're getting enough hours in bed, the quality of your sleep may not be what it once was.

---

2. Poor Sleep

Many women wake between 2am and 4am.

Others struggle to fall asleep or wake repeatedly during the night.

Common reasons include:

Night sweats

Anxiety

Stress

Hormonal changes

An overactive mind

When poor sleep becomes a regular pattern, it affects every part of your health.

---

3. Stress

Stress doesn't just affect your mind.

It affects your whole body.

When you're constantly juggling work, family, ageing parents, finances and everyone else's needs, your stress hormones stay elevated.

Over time this can leave you feeling physically and mentally drained.

Ironically...

Many women respond by exercising harder and eating less.

That often makes things worse.

---

4. Not Eating Enough

Many women are still trying to diet the way they did in their 20s.

Skipping meals.

Eating very little during the day.

Living on coffee until lunchtime.

Your body needs fuel.

Without enough calories, protein and nutrients, it's difficult to have the energy to exercise, recover and feel your best.

---

5. You're Doing Too Much

Sometimes the problem isn't that you're doing too little.

It's that you're doing too much.

Working.

Looking after everyone else.

Trying to exercise every day.

Keeping the house running.

Being constantly "on."

Your body needs recovery just as much as it needs movement.

---

6. Could It Be Something Else?

Sometimes fatigue has another cause.

It's worth speaking to your GP if you're experiencing ongoing exhaustion, particularly if it's new or worsening.

Other possible causes include:

Iron deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency

Thyroid problems

Diabetes

Sleep apnoea

Side effects of medication

A simple blood test can sometimes identify an underlying cause.

---

What Can You Do?

Start with the basics.

✔ Prioritise sleep where possible.

✔ Eat enough protein and nourishing foods.

✔ Stay hydrated.

✔ Strength train two or three times a week.

✔ Walk regularly.

✔ Make time to recover.

✔ Manage stress in ways that work for you.

Remember...

More isn't always better.

Consistency beats perfection.

My Takeaway

I've had periods where I've blamed myself for feeling tired.

I thought I needed more motivation.

More discipline.

Another workout.

What I've learnt is that our bodies aren't machines.

Sometimes they need rest.

Sometimes they need more food.

Sometimes they need support.

Listening to your body isn't giving up.

It's one of the healthiest things you can do.
